Chowder Day Weekend A Wonderful Celebration of PCD
PCD’s annual Chowder Day weekend was another resounding success. This community-wide event began in 1944 and has been a much-anticipated annual tradition ever since, as PCD comes together to cheer on the Knights in athletic contests throughout the day, enjoy chowder and clam cakes, and chat with old friends and new.
The weekend kicked off with the annual Alumni Reunion Dinner on Friday, October 13. In celebration of PCD’s centennial year, all alumni were invited to attend, instead of only classes celebrating milestone reunions. Seven decades were represented at the dinner, from 1956 to 2018. The robust turnout of over 120 guests included a large contingent from the 1970s, especially the 50th-year reunion class of 1973. There were also several alumni faculty in attendance.
Chowder Day morning dawned with bright sunshine, as the PCD campus filled with students, parents, alumni, faculty and coaches. With ten different athletic competitions throughout the day, plus children’s activities and of course, the wonderful chowder luncheon, it was a full day of fun and school spirit. There were also gatherings of HBS alumni and People of Color.
The weekend closed with the 15th Athletics Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, as we honored another incredible group of PCD athletes and coaches. This year’s inductees were Cap Woodruff '48, Duncan Cocroft '61, Dana Bentzinger '72, Don Watts '79, Kevin Bradley '03, Randelle Boots '09, Mary Suttell, the 1982 and 1983 Varsity Baseball Teams, and the 1999-2000 Girls Varsity Basketball Team. Athletics Hall of Fame Chair Mark Iacono '91 led the evening, which included a video montage retrospective of PCD athletic history (which can be viewed here), introductory videos for each honoree, and interviews of the inductees. The conversational format allowed for alums to talk about their athletic and school experiences in a personalized way.
“It was a fantastic weekend, including a record turnout at both the Reunion Dinner and the Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony,” said Associate Head of School Mark McLaughlin. “Chowder Day weekend is always a wonderful celebration of both the PCD community and our school spirit, but in our centennial year, having so many alumni on our campus really is an incredible feeling!”
